Tyre Nichols

January 27, 2023

Dear Campus Community,

There is no easy way to share this message, and we do not think there should be. We are here to name our deep sadness, frustration, and grief because Tyre Nichols’s life was ended, brutally and prematurely, by five Memphis police officers earlier this month. Tyre was a father, a community member, a son, and a friend. He was a 29-year-old Black man. He lived in Memphis and had roots not too far from here in Sacramento. He worked at FedEx and loved skateboarding. ...

Resources for Students and Registered Student Organizations to Prevent Harassment

October 18, 2022

The Divisions of Equity & Inclusion and Student Affairs know that some of you and your Registered Student Organizations (RSOs) have been directly, repeatedly, and overtly made to feel unwelcome and unsafe from recent global and local events. We have heard from students, faculty, staff, alumni, and families and take concerns about your well-being seriously. We know situations like these can easily escalate, both in person and virtually.

Support for UC Berkeley's community during the war in Ukraine

UC Berkeley stands in support of everyone affected by the war in Ukraine. We recognize the feelings of horror and terror the Ukrainian community must feel watching their homes — and the homes of their loved ones — become the targets of war. We are moved by the heroism and bravery of the Ukrainian people. Many Russian citizens, too, have risked their lives and freedom by standing up to their authoritarian regime and demanding an end to the war.

Images of war and humanitarian crisis can also be triggering reminders for others, including veterans and former refugees, who have...

Supports & Resources for Iranian Campus Community

October 5, 2022

UC Berkeley is aware of and concerned about the ongoing, intensifying government-sanctioned violence against people–notably women and students–who are peacefully protesting in Iran following the death of Mahsa Amini. We are paying serious attention to how the uprising and unrest are impacting our own campus community, and so we take action to show our care, support, and solidarity.

Seeing reports about internet blackouts and a climbing death toll across Iran depart from what we stand for as an...

Support of Undocumented Students

November 23, 2016

Dear campus community,

Today, on the eve of the Thanksgiving holiday, we pause to give thanks for all that we have. It is also a time to reflect on the needs of our friends, neighbors, and colleagues.

As noted in messages to the campus following the election, we have particular concern for those members of our community who feel the loss of a sense of safety and security, including students who are concerned about their legal status and continued ability to take advantage of all that Berkeley, and our country, have to offer.

The day following the presidential election...

As of latest media reports, there are more than 106 casualties (though, sadly, this number may grow as more is learned) and hundreds of structures have been destroyed. We offer our deepest...
