A new campus policy that would require students to dole out 20 percent or more of their tuition and fees ahead of classes will disadvantage a significant portion of the student body — particularly those who do not have thousands of dollars at their disposal.

I am writing in response to the June 29, 2016, front page article in the Daily Californian, titled, Breaking down the status of affirmative action at UC Berkeley. Let me begin by acknowledging that I may carry some responsibility for the inaccurate framing and misuse of data outlined in the article, as I was contacted by the Daily Cal for an interview for this story, and did not provide my perspective due to time constraints.

The past two weeks have ripped at the heart of America.

We have had to witness senseless killings and we’ve had to witness far too many of them.

Diana Lizarraga, the director of the Cal NERDS program, has been given the KPIX Jefferson Award for her work with non-traditional students studying Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). Reporter Sharon Chin came to Stephens Hall to talk with Diana and then joined some of the NERDS on their service day while they turned elementary students into scientists. Watch the story now.

Defense Secretary Ashton B. Carter announced that starting today, transgender people will now be allowed to openly serve in the armed forces. "Effective immediately, transgender Americans may serve openly. Our mission is to defend this country, and we don’t want barriers unrelated to a person’s qualification to serve preventing us from recruiting or retaining the soldier, sailor, airman or Marine who can best accomplish the mission,” Carter said. That means trans troops can no longer be discharged from the military.
