'Dreamers' to Stay in U.S. for Now, but Long-Term Fate Is Unclear

WASHINGTON — President Trump will not immediately eliminate protections for the so-called Dreamers, undocumented immigrants who came to the United States as small children, according to new memorandums issued by the administration Thursday night.

But White House officials said Friday morning that Mr. Trump had not made a decision about the long-term fate of the program and might yet follow through on a campaign pledge to take away work permits from the immigrants or deport them.

California Aims to Quash Immigration Detention Growth

SANTA ANA, Calif. — California is aiming to quash the growth of immigration detention in the state under a proposed budget measure to push back against the Trump administration's plans to boost deportations.

The state's $125 billion budget — which is set to be approved Thursday — has a related measure to prevent local governments from signing contracts with federal authorities for immigration detention facilities or expanding existing contracts. It would also have the state attorney general review conditions at immigration detention facilities in California.

UC Berkeley Releases Documents Pertaining to Free Speech Riot

On Tuesday of this week, the University of California, Berkeley released a set of documents related to the riot that occurred on campus earlier this year during a speaking event by provocateur Milo Yiannopoulos.

In a mass e-mail sent out late Tuesday, campus spokeswoman Liane Ko wrote: "The University has received a large number of California Public Records Act (CPRA) requests for a broad range of records related to invitations by student groups for Milo Yiannopoulos, Ann Coulter, and David Horowitz to speak on campus.

Underground Scholars Initiative celebrates 2nd graduating class

Francis, or "Frankie," Guzman, a 2007 UC Berkeley graduate, returned to his alma mater Sunday afternoon to address the second graduating class of the Underground Scholars Initiative, or USI, a pioneering program unique to UC Berkeley that connects campus resources to formerly incarcerated students and students with formerly incarcerated family members.

Guzman, who went behind bars at 15 years old, recounted a childhood in which police presence was to be expected, a sentiment reiterated by several other underground scholars.
