Dear campus community,
I, like so many of you, am horrified by what occurred in Virginia over the weekend. Today, I join with millions of others to condemn the reprehensible acts of the racist groups that brought violence and mayhem to Charlottesville and to the University of Virginia campus.
A self-described "positivity activist," Shola Richards knows how to connect to a crowd. On stage at UC Berkeley's fifth annual NOW Conference, Richards, author of "Making Work Work," has been tasked with infusing UC Berkeley's staff with a healthy dose of positivity — something that he works on daily.
"I try to leave a person or place just a little bit better than you found them," he tells a full auditorium. "It's not forever. It's just today. And today. And today," he says with a smile.
No woman is an island.
A lot of attention has been focused on Carol Christ, but it's her new cabinet that will make or break her tenure.
Christ's appointees are all well qualified. It's nice that a lot of them come from UC Berkeley. That some of them have already worked closely with Christ speaks volumes to the team's larger potential.

Executive Vice Chancellor and Provost: Paul Alivisatos
UC Berkeley officials said today they are confident they will be able to accommodate a request from the Berkeley College Republicans (BCR) for conservative commentator Ben Shapiro to speak on campus on Sept. 14.
Including letters of recommendation with freshman applications to Berkeley positively affected the enrollment of underrepresented students, according to a new study from the California Policy Lab.
UC Berkeley commissioned the study of its pilot recommendation-letters program to determine how the letters had an impact on diversity in campus admissions.
UC Berkeley has offered admission to more than 15,500 freshmen for the fall 2017 academic year, according to data released by the campus in conjunction with the university.
The admitted students were chosen from a pool of more than 85,000 students — an 18.3 percent acceptance rate for incoming freshmen, up from last year’s 17.5 percent freshmen admission rate.
