What follows is the third in a series of messages about our plans to expand the diversity of our university community in the broadest sense and in every form.
Dear campus community,
I am very pleased to announce that Professor of Education and Director of the Institute of Governmental Studies Lisa García Bedolla has been appointed to be UC Berkeley’s next Vice Provost for Graduate Studies & Dean of the Graduate Division. Lisa is a renowned scholar, a gifted teacher and mentor, and a highly respected campus leader who will ensure that we continue to build on a long tradition of offering world-class graduate education at Berkeley. She will begin her appointment on July 1, 2019.

Dear students, staff, and faculty,
Today, we join many around the world in mourning the deaths of at least 49 Muslim worshippers killed and dozens more injured in mass shootings at the Al Noor Mosque and Linwood Mosque in New Zealand. These unconscionable crimes mark a terrible moment in our global history, and the Berkeley campus sends its support to the people of New Zealand, Muslims of all nations, and everyone impacted by this tragedy. We strongly condemn these horrific acts of violence.

I was deeply troubled and disappointed to learn of the charges filed by the U.S. Department of Justice against several dozen individuals accused of cheating and accepting bribes to gain students’ unlawful admission to top universities, including the University of California.
The allegations associated with UC, if proven true, are a disservice to the hardworking and accomplished students and alumni who have earned their place at the university and continue to make us proud.
