I started in May as the Director for the American Indian Graduate Program (located in Barrows Hall) and am a member of Kha Po Owinge/Santa Clara Pueblo, a graduate from Haskell Indian Nations University, and an American Indian Studies graduate from UCLA.

Dear Members of the Berkeley campus community,

As you are likely aware, U.S. News and World Report has decided to “unrank” the campus for its 2019 rankings report because of Berkeley’s inadvertent misreporting of data related to alumni giving. To summarize: Berkeley, on our own, uncovered an unfortunate oversight on our part after a change in the ranking methodology. We then, without delay, reported the oversight to the publication, provided the corrected alumni giving data, and accepted responsibility for the error, as well as the consequence.

Dear Friends and Colleagues,

Today we join with people everywhere in mourning, anguish, and disbelief in the wake of two more horrific, senseless acts of violence in our country. Even as we continue to mourn the loss of life in Gilroy a very few days ago, we must now open our hearts even further to support and offer condolences to the friends, family, and colleagues of those who were slaughtered over the weekend in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio.

Berkeley Graduate Division

After a competitive national search, UC Berkeley welcomed Patrick Naranjo as the new director of the American Indian Graduate Program in May.

Prior to coming to campus, Patrick served as the Resource Coordinator for the Intersection, Academic Multicultural Resource Center at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). In that role, he was instrumental in developing and implementing campuswide strategies to enhance the academic outcomes of students and establish strong Native American engagement.

Welcome to a new year at Cal! I am excited and humbled to be starting this year as the Vice Provost for Graduate Studies and Dean of the Graduate Division.

Cal has long been a place of innovation, an institution that has produced knowledge that has, literally, changed the world. But I also know that the past few years have been challenging on campus and that many of our graduate students struggle to keep body and soul together.

With that in mind, I have three main goals that I hope to advance this year:
