Dear campus community,
For the past 17 years, the Chancellor's Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence and Equity (CAAIEE) has been presented to UC Berkeley faculty members for outstanding contributions in advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice (DEIBJ) through their research, teaching, and public and/or university service.
It is our great pleasure to announce the recipients of this year’s award. Please click on the links to read about their accomplishments:
- Rebecca Cheung, Assistant Dean for Leadership Development Programs in Education
- Damian Elias, Professor of Environmental Science, Policy and Management (ESPM)
- Thomas M. Philip, Professor of Education and the Berkeley Teacher Education Program
Dr. Cheung will use the grant award to provide need-based support to EdD students in the Leaders for Equity and Democracy program. These students hold deep commitments to serving the public good, but are not eligible to hold GSI or GSR positions while completing their program milestones.
Professor Elias will use the grant to increase recruitment of graduate students from underserved communities by creating online resources to help to demystify applying for graduate school in partnership with graduate students. Additionally, the grant will be used to expand and share ESPM’s anti-racism curriculum and training with other departments.
Professor Philip and the Berkeley Teacher Education Program (BTEP) plan to use the grant award to expand two areas of collaboration among BTEP and other campus units. One involves developing a potential pathway for UC Berkeley undergraduates into BTEP. The other is helping to strengthen and support K-12 Ethnic Studies in the Bay Area.
We are proud to work with all three of these visionary leaders, and to be able to honor them with this year’s Chancellor’s Award for Advancing Institutional Excellence and Equity. Please join us in congratulating them on their achievements.
