Today, the University of California, Berkeley, proudly received the 2024 Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award from Insight Into Diversity magazine, the oldest and largest diversity-focused publication in higher education. This prestigious award recognizes UC Berkeley for its outstanding commitment to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, belonging, and justice across campus. As a recipient, UC Berkeley will be featured in the November/December 2024 issue of Insight Into Diversity, along with 113 other recipients.
“Our commitment to creating a more equitable, accessible, and just campus is at the heart of everything we do and attempt at UC Berkeley. This recognition by the HEED Award is a testament to the efforts of so many across our institution who come together to work toward fostering a community where all members feel supported and have the potential to thrive,” said Fabrizio Mejia, Acting Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion.
UC Berkeley was selected for the HEED Award due to its comprehensive DEIBJ efforts, including programs focused on the recruitment and retention of students and employees, leadership support for diversity initiatives, enhancing campus culture and climate, and promoting supplier diversity. These efforts underscore UC Berkeley’s long-standing leadership in championing diversity, equity, and inclusion as core values in all aspects of campus life.
Lenore Pearlstein, publisher of Insight Into Diversity, shared, "The HEED Award process is rigorous, requiring institutions to showcase how they embed DEI in their daily work. UC Berkeley’s commitment shines through in their approach to making diversity a driving force behind their initiatives."
