Silvia Marquez appointed Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Implementation Manaager

September 30, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

Please join us in celebrating Silvia Marquez who was appointed to the role of Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Implementation Manager on June 1, 2021.

In response to recommendations from the HSI Task Force to establish an HSI implementation plan that included the hiring of staff dedicated to the HSI initiative, this role was designed in collaboration with the Vice Chancellor for Equity & Inclusion (VCEI) and the Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs (VCSA) and is shared between the two divisions.

The HSI Implementation Manager is responsible for advancing the campus-wide HSI initiative and providing project management to conceive and develop structures and processes that will lead to the successful implementation of the recommendations of the HSI Task Force to become a Latinx-thriving institution and achieve federal HSI designation by 2027.

Silvia is uniquely qualified to serve in this role given her experience in educational leadership roles at UC Berkeley. She knows first-hand the barriers students face in accessing their education and has built a powerful career in working towards eradicating this injustice. She has brilliantly served the higher education community throughout her career with a clear passion for equity and belonging. Silvia has benefitted from working in a variety of roles in several institutions and brings all that she has learned to bear in how she approaches her charge. Her leadership has always been recognized and on a campus like Berkeley with a plethora of talent, Silvia has proved exceptional even in this elite space. She was appointed by the VCSA to lead the Office of Undergraduate Admissions during a time of transition and was recently named as the ideal person to lead the implementation of the Undergraduate Student Diversity Project.  She most recently served on the HSI Task Force and was a leader in shaping the final recommendations for the campus.

Silvia is currently pursuing her doctorate in Educational Leadership at UC Davis and will continue to support and position Financial Aid and Scholarships as a strategic partner in achieving HSI status.

We are grateful that Silvia has assumed this role and look forward to her success and to our campus being designated a Hispanic Serving Institution.

Sincerely,
