Reminder: Sign up for free credit monitoring after cyberattack

April 29, 2021

Dear colleagues,

We are learning that many faculty and staff on campus have received notices from Experian that their Social Security numbers have appeared on the dark web.

This follows the announcement from the University of California about a cyber attack impacting the UC and hundreds of other organizations.

I want to encourage those who have not signed up for the free monitoring services to do so today. This free service is also available to the beneficiaries and family members listed on your financial accounts.

In setting up the account, you will be asked for personal information. This process will require you to provide some personal information that will prove your identity and other information that will be monitored. This is for your security. Experian already has the answers to the questions and is verifying that it is you.

We have put together a short slide presentation that provides information and steps you can take right now to protect your personal information. In the next few weeks, we will hold a few lunch gatherings to provide information and answer your questions.

Those who have signed up and received the Experian alerts should follow the recommended next steps offered by campus IT experts.

An article shared in the Berkeleyan has more information. Additional information about identity theft is available in this town hall discussion and through these resources.

Warm regards,

Oscar Dubón
