Division of Equity & Inclusion

Dear E&I Community,

Once again we are at the end of a semester, my first at UC Berkeley.  My calendar filled up much more quickly this fall than I had anticipated so I have not had the opportunity to meet very many of you. For that, I am deeply sorry and committed to doing so.

Dear Campus Community,

Dear UC Berkeley Community,

Tomorrow is Veterans Day, a time for us to honor those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. This day was first celebrated in 1919 as Armistice Day. Many countries celebrate the occasion as Remembrance Day, marking the end of World War I. Many UC Berkeley students, faculty, staff, and alumni are affiliated with the military and share the same commitment to public service and excellence that we hold true as a campus community.

Dear Campus Members

We would like to acknowledge that this communication of support should have been issued much sooner; for our delay, we apologize to the impacted Afghan community. Our thoughts are with our Afghan community members, their families, friends, and colleagues near and far. There are an estimated 60,000 Afghans in the Bay Area, some of whom have been here for decades and others recently arrived, who contribute significantly to the innovation, economy, and culture that make this region great.

Dear Campus Community,

The beginning of a new academic year is always an exciting time, and this one is particularly special for me. Like our new first-year and transfer students, sophomores, and those who transferred to UC Berkeley last year, I too, am new to the campus. My tenure as the vice chancellor for equity & inclusion started just three weeks ago.

Dear E&I colleagues,

Today is my final day in the role of VCEI.  I am truly grateful and honored to have worked with you for the past four years to serve the campus community.  There is no greater honor or reward than serving others.  And there has been no greater privilege for me than leading the Division of Equity & Inclusion.  I am in awe of your commitment to serving the campus community on a constant basis, often under the most challenging of circumstances.

People & Culture

Dear Colleagues,

I have the pleasure of sharing with you the wonderful news that earlier this morning UC President Drake announced that Juneteenth is now an official UC holiday, to be observed this year on Monday, June 28:

“Yesterday President Biden declared a federal holiday for Juneteenth, the day that celebrates and commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. This is a historic moment for our nation - 156 years in the making.
