As members of an academic community, united in its commitment to the public good, we feel a unique responsibility to confront prejudice, hatred, and bias. Whether we are confronting anti-Islamic words and deeds; racism; or hostility and discrimination based on religion, gender, or sexual orientation—these are all antithetical to what we stand for both personally and as members of Berkeley’s leadership team.

Over the weekend, the University became aware of a group on Facebook identifying itself as the White Student Union at UC Berkeley. The page is clearly intended to fuel conflict and provocation rather than to foster a serious and constructive dialogue among students about issues of race. This does not reflect the values of our campus community. We thank all of the students and community members who reached out to us and shared their voices in solidarity.

The historic match up of the Cal Bears against the Grambling State Tigers is being celebrated by a week long series of events and community outreach that will advocate for educational equity and achievement with in the African American Community. The events are sponsored by the UC Berkeley Black Alumni Club, African American Student Development, Division of Equity and Inclusion, Cal Athletics & the Office of the Chancellor.

Na’ilah Suad Nasir, professor of education and chair of African American Studies, has been named as UC Berkeley’s next vice chancellor for equity and inclusion. A member of the faculty since 2008, Nasir studies cultural and racial dimensions of schooling and learning. She is the mother of four, ages 10 to 23, the oldest of whom graduated from Berkeley last spring. For the past five years, Nasir has been a member of the Resident Faculty, supporting undergraduates by living alongside them, with her family, in campus housing.
