Campus mourns five killed in Oakland warehouse fire

Still reeling from the Oakland warehouse fire that claimed 36 lives — including five people with ties to UC Berkeley — the campus community gathered today for a solemn vigil at Zellerbach Hall intended, in the words of Chancellor Nicholas Dirks, “to mourn, remember and celebrate those whose absence we are only now beginning to confront and accept.”

Griffen Madden, Victim of Oakland Warehouse Fire, Recalled as Gifted by Berkeley Professors

Irina Kogel, who teaches Russian language, had Madden in classes twice at UC Berkeley. “He was the kind of student you would want to have,” said Kogel, who is now at Mt. Holyoke College in Massachusetts. “He was incredibly inquisitive and worked harder than he needed to. He always had a question about something.”

UC Berkeley Student Vanessa Plotkin, Alumnus Griffin Madden Confirmed as Victims in Warehouse Fire

Plotkin and Madden have been identified as victims in the Oakland fire that occurred Friday, according to a press release issued by the city of Oakland on Tuesday night. The city of Oakland released the identities of seven victims Sunday and 10 victims Monday, which included UC Berkeley alumnus David Cline; Nick Gomez-Hall, who worked at Counterpoint Press in West Berkeley; and Donna Kellogg, who worked at Berkeley’s Highwire Coffee Roasters.

Refrigerator May Have Caused Warehouse Fire

A refrigerator may have been the point of origin of the Oakland warehouse fire that has been confirmed to have killed at least 36 people including one UC Berkeley student, KTVU reported Tuesday. The autopsies already completed show that the victims died of smoke inhalation. UC Berkeley student Jenny Morris; campus alumnus David Cline; Chelsea Dolan, a DJ for campus radio station KALX who went by the moniker Cherushii; Em Bohlka and Donna Kellogg, who worked together at Berkeley’s Highwire Coffee Roasters and Nick Gomez-Hall, who worked at Counterpoint Press in West Berkeley have all been identified as victims of the fire.

An Outpouring of Support in Oakland

Hundreds of thousands of dollars have poured into two principal fund-raising campaigns since the warehouse fire in the city’s Fruitvale neighborhood on Friday left at least 36 people dead. “We are overwhelmed with the amount of support,” said Josette Melchor, founder of Gray Area Foundation for the Arts in San Francisco, which set up a fund-raising drive on Youcaring.com on Saturday.

Investigators Find Area Where Deadly Fire Began

The death count from the Oakland warehouse fire remained at 36 Tuesday morning, and officials said they do not expect to recover more victims from the ruins of the building. the only areas of the building that still need to be searched are the rear-center of the building where investigators believe the blaze started late Friday night, and a small area in the front-left-corner of the structure that remains too unstable to safely search.
