Monday, March 11, 6 p.m.
UC Berkeley, Boalt Hall, Room 132
Reception to follow.
The Haas Institute for a Fair & Inclusive Society invites you to join us for a conversation on the misalignment of power between the public, private and corporate spheres in our society. Over the past forty years, there has been an expansion of the corporate sphere, most prominently in the financial and credit sectors, and a concomitant shrinking of the public and private spheres. This has led to increasing numbers of people becoming marginalized and ceasing to be recognized as full members of society. The panelists will explore the historical context that enabled financial institutions, in particular, to attain and wield unprecedented power, and how it has affected our democracy and, in particular, marginalized individuals and communities. They will also consider alternative visions for our economy, and what it will take to hold powerful political forces and the corporations that support them accountable.
