STEM Equity and Inclusion Initiative

The STEM Equity & Inclusion Initiative, launched in 2016, aims to deepen campus impact by strengthening and supporting UC Berkeley's STEM diversity programs.

Goals

  • Describe the nature of the STEM diversity pipeline on our campus.

  • Support key stakeholders in creating an outward-facing campus vision around STEM diversity.

  • Help build resources for programs on campus.

Objectives

  • Landscape all STEM diversity programming at UC Berkeley. We aim to generate a clearinghouse of STEM diversity programs. This includes any current programming that aims to increase the diversity at any level (K-12, undergraduate, graduate, postdoctoral, faculty) in a STEM field. We also welcome ideas or beginning plans for programs.

  • Bring stakeholders together around community-identified needs.

  • Create a campus-wide vision based on the needs and recommendations of the stakeholders.

Accomplishments

  • Collected data and conducted in-depth data analysis on 118 STEM diversity programs offered at UC Berkeley or closely partnered with the campus. Read the Executive Summary of the analysis

  • One-pager shows the STEM fields, targeted and benefited constituencies, and groups from underserved communities that are addressed in the wide-breadth of programs. Summarized here.

  • Through in-person meetings and an online form, recommendations were collected that identified needs for STEM diversity programs on campus.

  • On May 2, 2017, a community gathering with stakeholders was held. A discussion with all attendees was conducted to hear what the community wanted for next action steps. The gathering also gave stakeholders an opportunity to meet, network, and potentially build new partnerships or collaborations. View program and View slides

 Next Steps

  • Recommendations emerging from the May 2nd gathering are being analyzed.

  • Check back for updated reports.
