History of BILD

The Berkeley Initiative for Leadership on Diversity (BILD) was launched in May 2006 as a catalyst to engage the campus community in innovative approaches and partnerships that advance staff diversity and foster an inclusive workplace environment.

The initiative was launched by the Chancellor's Office and the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate. The Chancellor’s Office would provide funding for three periods for staff at all levels, including student employees and faculty, to develop innovative solutions on issues of staff diversity and inclusion in the workplace across the campus. As directed by the initial planning committee, the initiative would be advised and guided by a Steering Committee representing a broad spectrum of BILD constituents.

In the summer of 2007, the initiative began to be administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion.
