Vice Chancellor for Equity & Inclusion

Interactive Forum

The Berkeley Initiative for Leadership on Diversity (BILD) was launched in May 2006 as a catalyst to engage the campus community in innovative approaches and partnerships that advance staff diversity and foster an inclusive workplace environment.

The initiative was launched by the Chancellor's Office and the Berkeley Division of the Academic Senate. The Chancellor’s Office would provide funding for three periods for staff at all levels, including student employees and faculty, to develop innovative solutions on issues of staff diversity and inclusion in the workplace across the campus. As directed by the initial planning committee, the initiative would be advised and guided by a Steering Committee representing a broad spectrum of BILD constituents.

In the summer of 2007, the initiative will be administered by the Office of the Vice Chancellor for Equity and Inclusion.

Caroline Kane, Professor in Residence, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology
"Three or four years after I helped to found the Biology Scholars Program, we began to see minority Biology students walking across the stage at commencement. Before that, there were so few that many who did receive diplomas didn't walk. Now the Scholars all sit together at the ceremony and cheer each other on."
